The 117th NAACP National Convention Kicks Off With Investing in the Next Generation of Filmmakers

As the 117th NAACP National Convention officially kicks off in Chicago, six emerging filmmakers are already taking the first step toward bringing their stories to life.
The NAACP welcomed this year's 2026 Cinematic Shorts Competition cohort during a special reception celebrating the filmmakers selected for one of the organization's premier creative initiatives. Presented in partnership with Adobe, the competition challenges six filmmakers to produce original short films centered on issues of social justice.
The opportunity extends far beyond the competition itself. Each winning filmmaker will receive a $10,000 production grant to develop their project alongside the NAACP Hollywood Bureau and NAACP+ Studios. Every filmmaker selected for this year's cohort will also receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Los Angeles for the 58th NAACP Image Awards, where they'll walk the red carpet and participate in meetings with industry executives.
The reception was led by Logan Coles, a writer, producer, director, and co-founder of X•ception Content, the independent media company he helped build alongside the late Chadwick Boseman and longtime creative partners. Rather than focusing solely on the competition, Coles challenged the filmmakers to recognize the value of the people surrounding them.

"It has become community building," Coles said.
That message was reflected throughout the room. The atmosphere felt light and welcoming as filmmakers, producers, executives, journalists, and creatives naturally moved from conversation to conversation. While each filmmaker had arrived with a different story, they all shared the same opportunity to build relationships that could extend far beyond the convention.
Also welcoming the cohort was Bree Webber, a former participant in the 2023 Cinematic Shorts Competition whose career has since expanded through producing for the NAACP Hollywood Bureau, developing content with JuVee Productions, and supporting cultural programming with The Diva Foundation. Her presence served as a reminder of what is possible after the competition ends, demonstrating how the program continues to invest in filmmakers beyond a single project.
Attendees traveled from across the country, bringing together creatives from the East Coast, West Coast, Midwest, and South under one roof. The reception became more than an introduction to a competition. It became a space where ideas were exchanged, connections were made, future collaborations quietly began, and Creative Cypher was honored to be in attendance.
As the NAACP National Convention gets underway, the Cinematic Shorts Competition continues to do more than fund short films. It is creating pathways for emerging filmmakers to access mentorship, industry relationships, and opportunities that can shape the next chapter of their careers. At this event, the focus wasn't about who would win. It was about six filmmakers realizing they had already joined a community committed to helping them succeed.
